Nigeria, Saint Kitts and Nevis Sign Historic 90-Day Visa-Free Agreement

Citizens of Nigeria and Saint Kitts and Nevis can now travel visa-free for up to 90 days under a landmark reciprocal agreement signed by both countries. The policy, which took effect on August 4, 2025, follows high-level engagements earlier this year between Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and Prime Minister Terrance Drew of Saint Kitts and Nevis in Abuja.

This marks the first time Nigeria has extended visa-free access to a nation outside the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and beyond the African continent, signalling a significant shift in the country’s foreign relations.

The agreement, which applies to holders of ordinary, official, and diplomatic passports, is expected to strengthen bilateral ties by boosting trade, investment, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connections between Africa and the Caribbean.

Previously, Nigeria’s visa-free regime was limited primarily to ECOWAS member states, with Cameroon and Chad as the only exceptions on the continent. By opening its borders to Saint Kitts and Nevis, Nigeria is creating a direct mobility and trade corridor linking both regions.

This development also represents the first practical outcome of President Tinubu’s proposal to the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) for broader visa-waiver arrangements. The OECS, which includes Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Saint Kitts and Nevis, is being positioned for deeper Africa–Caribbean collaboration through such initiatives.

With this breakthrough, Nigeria has taken a bold step in advancing intercontinental partnerships and fostering global south cooperation.
